About Our Club

Senior Citizens’ Club, Vashi is perhaps the oldest organization of Senior Citizens in Navi Mumbai. During the early eighties, CIDCO was developing the new township of Navi Mumbai. A large population of retired persons chose to settle down in Navi Mumbai as they found Greater Bombay to be congested and the cost of real estate there to be very high. These retired people belonged to different professions, castes and creeds. Very soon they felt the need for a common platform where they could meet, exchange ideas and share experiences.

Thus a small group of 7-8 retired persons came together, discussed this social need and founded the Senior Citizens’ Club, Vashi on the 12th Sept. 1982. Shri N M Supnekar, a retired police officer, was the Founder President. The Club was registered as a Public Charitable Trust in the same year. It caters to the social and recreational requirements of the senior citizens.

To start with, the members used to meet in their houses by rotation from time to time. However, as the number of members increased, this arrangement proved inadequate. Shortly, CIDCO allotted to the Club a small room in the Community Centre in Sector 2, Vashi and the Club started functioning there on a daily basis. The activities included socializing and playing indoor games.

Then came a lucky break in 1993. The Club received a contract from CIDCO to collect water-bills on commission basis. This activity continued for four years. The funds generated through this activity made it feasible to lease a plot of land in Sector 8, Vashi and a small Club House named Nandadeep was constructed. It had a hall, a TV room-cum-library, an office, a kitchenette and a toilet block. The Club shifted to its own building in 1999. The Club is the first Senior Citizens’ organization in Maharashtra to have its own building.

As the popularity of the Club grew, these premises, too, proved insufficient. The adjacent plot was then taken on lease. An extension of approximate 1500 sq.ft comprising of stilts plus two halls was added to the earlier construction in the year 2009. This was a major achievement for an organization of retired persons which charged its members only one-time life-membership fees. It is also a symbol of their unity and untiring efforts.
